In the early 20th Century around two thirds of all cigarettes sold in England were Players. "Players Please" was a slogan that was introduced in 1924 and became heavily embedded into the brand's identity.


This sign is likely to date from the 1940s/50s but could be a little earlier. A double-sided, flange sign - designed to stick out from the shop front at a 90 degree angle - easily visible as people walked along the pavement. It's original flange is present and functional; some of the original fixing holes have corroded though sufficient remain in good order. Decades exposed to the elements have dulled the enamel surface's sheen. On one face a persistent drip (presumably from a leaking gutter or similar) has eaten through the blue enamel layer leaving a vertical white streak. The other face has seen a more general deterioration of the blue enamel layer resulting in a mottling to the background. Aside from the effects of time and exposure to the elements, the sign has generally fared well with minimal enamel losses. Both faces remain clearly legible with the iconic, striking cigarette company's graphics.


The sign measures 41cm square and the flange is 4cm deep.
