Item Details

This charming, reverse painted silhouette coaching scene with mirrored duck pond and maple frame is likely to date to the early 20th century, though clearly inspired by similarly styled Georgian / Victorian pieces. A nicely detailed painting with gold accents, the coach is sign written for London & Birmingham and appears to be London bound as the four horses approach a London mile marker. The scene is set above a duck pond which has used a piece of mirror to emulate the water's reflection. The piece uses a lovely, early piece of glass - nice and wobbly with a few imperfections; probably re-used from an older picture. Generally the piece remains in nice original condition. There's a very slight 'blooming' behind the glass, only noticeable on close inspection and the left side of the frame has a strip of the maple veneer missing, though this is an old loss and the wood behind has coloured down over the years so this doesn't draw the eye. The picture measures 42cm wide x 31.5cm high x 2.5cm deep.
