https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/ljw-antiquesA superior example - this blue on white enamel sign boldly declares 'Smoking Strictly Prohibited' ... A legacy from a time where smoking was common place almost anywhere, anytime - the avoidance of a lit cigarette around certain pieces of machinery / fuel / chemicals really needed to be made clear.
It's likely that this sign with it's hard-wearing / easy clean enamelled surface is from an industrial setting, rather than a guest-house, hotel or similar where a paper or painted notice would have sufficed.
I don't know who the manufacturer 'G & M.A.' was - this is Notice No.11 - presumably a variety of other warnings / notices were available to order. It's not an easy piece to date, but that lovely mix of typefaces and font sizes has a feel of Victorian poster design so I would assume this to be from the earlier part of the 20th century, probably 1930s.
It's survived the decades in excellent condition with a fantastic surface gloss (see angled photo where I've tried to show this). A few losses around the outer edges but nothing else to note. It can be hung using its original mounting holes and displays well.
It measures 38cm wide x 25.5cm high.
