https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/ljw-antiquesJoseph Thorley Ltd manufactured animal feed at their factories in Kings Cross, London - right in the heart of London's rail and canal networks.
First formed in 1851 Joseph Thorley Ltd were operating well into the 20th century.
This enamel sign is likely to date to the 1920s/'30s. Manufactured by Wood & Penfold Ltd, London it has a nice combination of bold lettering and a detailed pictorial of the feed sacks.
It's survived the decades in reasonable order, though there are clear signs of its age. I suspect that it's spent a chunk of time sat on its left edge, perhaps in a garden or similar and has weathered with enamel loss and discolouration along that side. The once glossy enamel surface has dulled through surface scratching but it still retails a 'sheen' (see angled photo where I've tried to demonstrate this). All this said, the whole sign is clearly legible; the lettering remains bold and you can still see the shading and lettering on the pictured feed sacks. It's a bold, eye catching piece with some very authentic wear and tear.
The original mounting holes in the upper corners have worn through but the central and side holes remain functional and the sign displays well.
It measures 81.5cm wide x 69cm high.
