Item Details

Here we have two lovely, bright and well preserved examples of the iconic WW1 Turkish Prisoner of War beadwork snake.

This snake is made from crocheted beadwork and is stuffed with horsehair, cotton or cloth. Turkish prisoners of the British produced this type of beadwork during the First World War (1914-1918). They were made to be traded or sold (and probably to alleviate some of the boredom).

These two are of decent length; the red headed one is 67cm long and the darker blue / green headed one around 77cm long. Both have the beaded loops at their mouths and the blue / green headed one has little extra beadwork detail at the tail. Both are very clean and bright and have clearly been kept carefully over the years.

I'm listing these two together as it's increasingly difficult to find one good example and lovely to have a matched pair that have probably spent a chunk of their lives together, though they could be separated if needs be...
