Item Details

A striking, reverse printed glass panel for WHSmith - the stationers. This newsboy sign was in use from the early 1900s and there were many variations used over the decades. This particularly variation isn't one I've seen before; it's nicely detailed and with a small highstreet scenen in the background... It's hard to date exactly, though the lithoprinting feels 1950s/'60s to me, the glass has some wobbles / distortions implying either drawn glass, or early float glass... (i.e. 1950s) Originally, the glass panel was probably used in an illuminating sign, it has been framed with an open-back so it still allows light through if placed in a window or similar. The glass panel remains in good order with a couple of scuffs and tape marks to the reverse that do not show on the front. The framing is, obviously, later but displays well. The piece measures 75.5cm high x 50cm wide x 2cm deep.
