Item Details

A wonderfully chunky, graphic piece of jewellery, this silver and niello arrow shaped brooch is an absolutely fantastic, quality example of it's type. It can be worn as a brooch, but would be sizeable enough to use as a scarf pin or (as the pin is hidden behind the shaft of the arrow) could be suspended from a chain as a pendant. The piece dates to the late 19th century and is stamped on the C-clasp with what looks like the French mark of a boar's head, though it's hard to be sure. If that's what it is it would pin-point the piece's production to Paris. A sign of the it's quality; the brooch has a steel pin, used as steel is harder than silver...

Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or at least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. Here we see the decorative technique has been used to great effect along the entirety of the piece and the decoration has remained in excellent condition without any notable rubbing or wear.
