Item Details

1920's Original Printers Letterpress Typography Rack. We recently cleared a printworks in Leipzig, untouched for many years. We recovered a whole bunch of exceptional cabinets from ‘Ernst Rudolph Muller’ - fachgeschaff fur das graph gemerbe – Leipzig 24. Literally translated as ‘Specialist shop for the graph community’. Made of pine this is a basic cabinet with pull out shelves used in the letterpress printworks, with a century of age and character. We have gently cleaned the unit and left it as untouched as possible. The unit was used to store and printing plates ready for printing. Letterpress type blocks were laid out (set) in a frame, then secured with spacers and 'furniture' wedges before the printer moved the frame to the press for printing. Original presses used simple manual pressure which then progressed to screwed weighted plates and then a roller before eventually engraved plates replaced the individual type blocks. An exceptional piece of history and just a beautiful piece of furniture. Our workshop has cleaned and serviced the cabinet.

Internal Shelf Dimensions: L59 x W74 x H2 all in cm.
