In 1853 the textile industrial revolution arrived in Loos, Nord France with the formation of the Esquermes factory by Alfred Thirez. The factories produced cotton thread for sewing and embroidery. Suroy was born from the practical need to provide hard wearing dry, robust containers that could store the textile raw materials. Made from a dusty earth red vulcanised/boiled card with riveted construction and usually(but not always) marked with the Suroy Lion brand.
