This pensive figure has striking similarities to Édouard Manet's portrait of a lady titled Plum Brandy (c. 1877), from the sitter's clothing and appearance to her lethargic pose and the wistful tone of the painting. Resting on a surface, the lady appears to be daydreaming or deep in thought, with the rose in her gloved hand suggesting she is thinking of a loved one. This sense of reflection and yearning is beautifully manifested in the soft palette and brushwork of the piece.
