This pen and ink drawing by an artist presently unidentified depicts a reclining woman surrounded by loosely described female figures and vessels. Sweeping black contours and broad ink passages contrast with fine, broken lines against the warm brown paper, giving the composition an expressive, spontaneous character. The elongated horizontal arrangement follows the central figure’s reclining pose, while overlapping forms suggest an intimate setting without defining its architecture. Inscribed on the reverse “La odalisca,” meaning “The Odalisque,” (usually refers to a reclining woman, often nude or partly clothed, presented in an imagined Ottoman or Middle Eastern interior.) the work interprets a traditional figurative subject through simplified shapes and gestural marks. Its restrained palette and rhythmic composition offer a distinctive focal point for a thoughtfully arranged interior.
Artist
Artist presently unidentified; the reverse appears to name “A. Gastó.”
