An amazing framed water colour of a street scene in Constantinople, (Istanbul) men in Turkish attire smoking their Shisha pipes look on as a barber shaves a man with a cut throat.

The painting is signed Constantinople 1920 which was a way Russian exile Vladimir Fedorovich Kadulin known by his artists name Karelin Mitrich would sign his work. The quality of the art work & water colours is unmistakably Karelin Mitrich.


Mitrich, Karelin (1884 Kamyanets-Podilski - 1957 New York) Mitrich was one of the most successful Russian caricaturists of the first half of the 20th century, his biography reads like a novel and his work was already widely disseminated during his lifetime via reproductions and postcards. After the Soviet Revolution of 1917, he lived in exile in Constantinople occupied by European powers at the time & drew large numbers of drawings of life there & the characters he encountered for the Zarnitsy Almanac. The rights to his motifs were bought in the early 1920s by a businessman who had postcards printed, which probably enabled Mitrich to emigrate to the USA, where he then worked as a commercial artist.


The print comes in original condition, still in original frame & mount which has been done very well. Please look closely at the pictures to get a better idea.
