An early north country carved stone creeing trough or mortar. To Cree is to bruise wheat or barley in a large stone mortar until the husks fall off. This would then be boiled for broth or frumenty. A curiously Northern item, mortars of this size could be found in large houses and steadings the medieval period and earlier.
