Item Details

Style: A handsome 19th-century large mahogany veneered chest of drawers. It features two short over three long drawers, all fitted with wooden knob handles and standing on elegant bracket feet. Condition is good for its age, noting small open knots and splits inside the drawers (easily addressed with liners) and a minor veneer loss beside the top right-hand drawer.


Story: The modern chest of drawers evolved from medieval "coffer chests" by the late 17th century. While early versions were simple and often made of oak, a demand from wealthy buyers soon led to more decorative designs, incorporating veneers and inlays.
