https://www.thehoarde.com/dealers/the-english-potted-plant-companyA charming antique Victorian Torquay ware sgaffito motto ware loving cup in the most glorious duck egg blue colour with a terracotta and cream paisley pattern. A very sweet piece which we have planted with a medley of spring bulbs including N. Bridal Crown, N, tete et Tete and Muscari.
As part of the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Arts and Crafts movement, manufacturers were encouraged to take an interest in terracotta ware. Also at this time the wealthy Victorian tourists started to visit the newly discovered English Riviera to take advantage of the mild climate. Victorian Torquay Ware originated in the 1860s-70s, flourishing into the 20th century as charming, affordable, slip-decorated, and sgraffito-engraved souvenirs for tourists. Using local Devonshire clay, potteries like Watcombe and Aller Vale produced iconic "Motto Ware" featuring colourful, whimsical scenes and humorous Devon-dialect phrases, often featuring cottage scenes or maritime themes.
This pretty Loving Cup has the phrase:
If you easit
Be ai-sy
Be as ai-sy
As ye can 1821
It's in good condition for its age, but it has some crazing and small chips on the rim and handles.
