Item Details

Nine “Pints” of the law Norman Fowler (1903 – 2001)
This colossal and wonderfully humorous painting on board was originally commissioned for the Kent Police Museum. Painted by the late British artist Norman Fowler and entitled Nine “Pints” of the Law, the work is a playful and highly unusual piece of British social history.

Monumental in scale, the painting is formed from six individual board sections which come together to create one extraordinary artwork measuring over six metres wide. Its combination of humour, character and sheer size gives it tremendous visual impact, making it an exceptional statement piece for a commercial setting, hospitality interior, large residence or collection.

An additional panel, positioned to the far right and not shown in the photographs, depicts a single policeman’s helmet resting on the floor.

Dimensions
Overall:

Each panel measures approximately 9 ft x 4 ft x 5 mm.

Details
Date: Circa 1970
Origin: United Kingdom
Artist: Norman Fowler (1903–2001)
Material: Painted wood board
Condition: Fair
Weight: Approximately 30 kg in total
Construction: Six individual sections forming a single artwork

Condition Report
The painting remains in very presentable condition considering its age, scale and construction. There is fading to the painted surface in areas, together with expected age-related wear throughout.

Panel number five has a partial break, which has been stabilised with a wooden backing support. The edges of the individual boards show areas of fraying, wear and minor losses, as illustrated in the photographs. Each section also retains nail/support holes from previous installation.

Due to the exceptional scale of the work, it has proved difficult to photograph in its entirety. Please note that there is an additional section to the right, not shown in the main photographs, featuring a solitary policeman’s helmet resting on the floor.

When assembled, the six panels create an imposing artwork measuring approximately 275 cm high x 610 cm wide — a truly monumental and wonderfully eccentric piece.
