An exceptionally rare and complete 14-piece modular silver-platedsurtout de table(table centerpiece plateau), crafted in France during the height of the Belle Époque/Art Nouveau period, circa 1900. This magnificent set features an innovative, highly integrated botanical design, where the structural, mechanical, and decorative elements seamlessly merge.
Design & Mechanical Engineering
The centerpiece is designed as a series of interconnectedjardinière(trough) modules intended to hold dense seasonal flora or woody evergreens. The openwork galleries are beautifully detailed with an intricate, crisp basketweave pattern bordered by delicate milgrain detailing.
Embodying the pure naturalism of the French Art Nouveau movement, the entire set seamlessly balances dual botanical motifs:Mistletoe (Le Gui)—the historic French symbol of New Year good fortune—andOak Leaves with Acorns (Le Chêne et le Gland)—the traditional symbol of strength and hospitality.
The structural feet are beautifully cast as dense clusters of mistletoe berries and foliage. Mechanically, the individual modules are linked together by ingenious, spring-loaded interlocking clips shaped as mistletoe sprigs. The sides of each trough feature masterfully integrated oak leaf and acorn release levers.Operating as hidden thumbpieces, compressing these cast foliate tabs retracts the internal tension springs to unlock the modules.
Stamped with the French patent mark"Breveté SGDG", this sophisticated engineering allows for flawless interchangeability; because the sections are unnumbered, any module can connect seamlessly to another, offering limitless layout configurations.
