Item Details

A rare pair of English hand-carved limestone fruit baskets dating from the 18th century. The carved apples, grapes and pears remain remarkably well defined despite over 200 years of weathering.


Smaller baskets like these were traditionally placed along the walls of walled kitchen gardens, where the carved fruit reflected what was grown within, while larger examples were reserved for the gate piers of country houses.


Highly decorative, they will sit naturally on a garden wall, terrace or a pair of plinths, and are also the perfect size for a garden room.

Minor scratches, nicks and scuffs consistent with age and use
No major losses, cracks or structural damage
Slight surface wear and variations in colour due to weathering
