Item Details

A rare mid-19th century garden suite by the celebrated French maker Grassin-Baledans, comprising a pair of generously scaled wrought iron armchairs and their original matching table.

Established in Arras in 1840, Grassin-Baledans became one of France's foremost makers of ornamental garden furniture, producing finely worked wrought iron pieces that offered a lighter, more elegant alternative to the heavier cast iron fashions of the period. The firm remained in operation until 1914 and is now among the most sought-after names in 19th century French garden furniture.

Forged from half-round wrought iron, the suite survives with its original cast iron maker's plaques intact — a detail seldom retained after more than a century outdoors. It has been sympathetically restored in our workshop and finished in dead-flat matt black powder coating, chosen to echo the character of the original painted surface while ensuring lasting preservation.

The armchairs are exceptionally comfortable, well suited to terrace dining or evening drinks. Complete Arras suites of this date are increasingly difficult to source; examples retaining both their original table and maker's plaques are rarer still.
