Item Description
This vintage cast stone statue depicts Hercules, the Roman demigod, born of a union between Zeus and a mortal woman. He is probably the most well known in all Greek mythology. The price shown is for the statue and weathered pedestal and you can see these together in the later pictures. Both statue and pedestal combined stand at an impressive 130cm tall, making them ideal as a feature piece in the middle of a pathway, in a hedge etc.
Like all materials, there are good quality pieces and not so good quality ones and though made of reconstituted stone, as opposed to natural carved stone, this cast stone example has very good definition to the face, hair, muscles, feet and lions pelt, something you don't find in lesser pieces.
He stands leaning to one side weary, against his club, which has the pelt of the Nemean lion draped over it. Killing the lion was his first task. He has just performed one of the last of the Twelve Labours, which is suggested by the apples of the Hesperides he holds in his right hand, his arm behind his back.
He is cast in the round, meaning front and back is fully shown, and is nicely naturally weathered all over. He has remnants of old green paint, which actually looks like verdigris so sits very well on him. In lovely condition with no repairs or damage I can see, he stands approx 58cm tall x 19cm square at base x 25cm at widest part of statue. Overall height for statue and pedestal is 130cm.
