Item Description
A small, eighteenth century, grey and pink marble mortar with a bronze pestle. This is a small, but useful size of mortar for grinding herbs and spices. The marble is a beautiful colour, ranging from dark to pale grey and mottled with a salmon pink. The pestle is very unusual, with a turned wooden handle and a bronze end. With age the wooden handle, which is possibly walnut, has warped a little and has much character. There is a crack in the wooden handle and the mortar has slight chipping to all of the lobes. This can be seen in the images.
Dimensions: Mortar: Length 21.2cm. Width 20.8cm. Height 10cm. Pestle: Length 23.5cm. Diameter 3.4cm.
