Item Description
A most unusual, and very decorative set of seven, late 19th/early 20th century glass coffee jars. These would have been used in a coffee shop in France and they date from c.1900. They are a great shape, being filled from the base, and they would have been sealed with corks. The labels are quite intriguing, some having the name of the coffee, such as “SANTOS ORDINARY”, “CARACOLI” and “COSTA RICA”. Two have the name of towns in Haiti, “PETIT GOAVE” and “GONAIVES” and these would have been the towns from which the coffee came. Haiti has a long history of coffee production from its introduction by French colonists in the early 18th century. Four of the others have the names of arbitration courts, two for London, one in Hambourg and one in the Havre. These chambers or courts were all established in the late 19th century to resolve commercial disputes and coffees must have been named after them. These coffees don’t seem to exist any more as I can find nothing relating to them, only the courts. So not only are these jars very decorative but they are also a talking point with good, historical interest.
They are all in excellent condition except for the one with the “HAITI GONAIVES TRIE” label which has a large chip under the foot.
Dimensions: Each jar measures 35cm high by 11.8cm. diameter at the foot.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A add £100. Most of Western Europe add £50.
