Item Description
Costermongers - street sellers of fruit, vegetables, and shellfish - were a familiar sight in Victorian Britain, their hand‑pulled barrows and wagons brightly painted to catch the eye in crowded markets. This rear panel would have been mounted at the back of such a cart, advertising the vendor’s wares as it was wheeled through the streets.
The survival of the original 19th‑century paintwork beneath later signwriting is a testament to the panel’s long working life. It’s likely the wagon changed hands, with the new owner repainting only the lettering to reflect his trade in whelks, cockles, and winkles - a quintessentially British delicacy, especially popular in the Victorian era.
