Item Description
A large wooden figure of a bear, hand carved in Japan in the mid to late 20th century. These figures were traditionally made in the Hokkaido region by the Ainu people, and this example is typical of their work. This bear is shown walking on his hind legs with a huge fish slung over his shoulder. He has been skilfully hand carved with lots of detail to his fur and is a good large example. He has a particularly appealing face - some of these bears can look rather fierce, but this one has a kindly face, made more characterful by his inset glass eyes. There is a maker's stamp to the base.
This piece is in good condition with minor surface wear.
