Item Description

As this sign will attest - in the early 20th century, OXO's stock cubes were 'invaluable for cooking' and even had themselves a Royal Warrant!

Liebig's Extract of Meat Company introduced the trademark Oxo in 1899. Originally the liquid stock they produced was too expensive for many households, Oxo produced their first cubes in 1910 and this further increased Oxo's popularity. During World War I, 100 million Oxo cubes were provided to the British armed forces.

In the first half of the 20th century, OXO were big on brand promotion - set on making themselves a household name; In 1908, Oxo was one of the sponsors of the London Olympic Games and supplied marathon runners with Oxo drinks "to fortify them.".

In the 1920s, the company acquired a Wharf on the south bank of the river Thames in London where they erected a factory with a sizeable tower fitted with distinctive windows spelling out 'OXO' - a.k.a - The Oxo Tower!

This lithographically printed tin flange sign probably dates to the 1930s/'40s and has differing images on the inner and outer faces. Both feature bold designs and vibrant colours which have softened beautifully over the decades.

These tin signs are more vulnerable than their enamel counter parts, but this example has survived well - there's a little fading to the outer face, particularly to the blue background and some surface scratching. The inner face has a little crazing to the paint surface and a little surface scratching but both sides display well. It can still be hung using the original flange which remains good and straight.

It measures 35cm wide x 34.5cm high and the flange is 4.5cm deep.
