Although widely associated with France, interestingly the Poodle is thought to have originated in Medieval Germany as a Duck Hunting dog. Its name comes from the German word "pudelin" which means "to splash". The Poodles distinctive coat clip was developed to keep them warm yet manoeuvrable when in water retrieving game. In 1631 Rembrandt included a faithful Poodle in a full length self portrait. The name of the painting is "Self portrait in oriental attire with Poodle" please see the last image.
