Item Description
We have no reason to believe this is not what it says it is. A small wooden fragment from H.M.S Natal. An interesting little desk top display piece. Measuring 5" x 2" x 1.5" H. Could be of interest to a multitude of different people.
H.M.S Natal was a Royal Navy warrier class armoured cruiser. She escorted King George V royal yacht to India in 1911-1912. H.M.S Natal was sunk by a internal cordite explosion just off the coast at Cromarty in the Scottish Highlands on the 30th December 1915 with the loss of at least 390 crewmen & civilians.
It is quite plausible a Scottish local resident picked this fragment up from the scene shortly after the incident & then decided it was worth mounting. The whole item is right & dates to the period of 1915. The base is brown bakelite, the timber fragment appears to be Teak, possibly from a rail or decking. The plaque which has been individually letter punch stamped is a piece of non ferrous metal, not brass it could possibly be silver. Its just a nice little unusual interesting item. Its sure to be of interest to someone.
