Fox Head Door Stop Taxidermy 19Th Century Victorian Animal Trophy Hunting Skin

We bought this in the Norfolk area recently & thought it was highly unusual. A late 19th century English country house fox head door stop. It has clearly been a door stop all its life, rather than a fox head which has simply come away from its wall shield. There is a brass finger ring at the top between the ears, the base is flat & the skin runs all the way around at the base of the neck. Presented in honest time aged tired condition all commensurate with its age & purpose as a door stop, with wear especially to the ear tips. Although there is a brass finger ring at the top, without doubt the human foot would have moved this item more often than not! Size 11" x 7" x 5". Unknown English taxidermist. Interestingly the first documented fox hunt in England was in Norfolk in 1534. Where a local farmer used farm dogs to chase down & kill a fox, most likely entirely for pest control purposes only. Fox hunting reached its height of popularity around the turn of the 1900s, finally being banned in England in 2004.
