Item Description
A wonderfully sculptural vintage bamboo and rattan plant stand, attributed to Italian manufacture and dating from circa the 1960s.
Standing 95 cm high, the piece is constructed around three gracefully curved and crossed bamboo uprights, supported on a tripod base and bound with contrasting natural cane. Three graduated rattan baskets are positioned asymmetrically at different heights, giving the stand an unusually animated, architectural silhouette.
The baskets are beautifully formed from tightly coiled rattan in a warm honey tone, contrasting with the darker bamboo framework. The combination is characteristic of the sophisticated natural-material furniture produced in Italy during the 1950s and 1960s, associated with the relaxed Riviera style that would later become synonymous with makers including Vivai del Sud.
Designed as a plant or flower stand, it works equally well today as a decorative sculptural object. Particularly effective filled with trailing plants, where the three different levels allow the foliage to become part of the composition.
An attractive and increasingly sought-after piece of mid-century decorative furniture, combining organic materials with a distinctly modern sense of line and movement.
