Item Description

A late 19th century, cast iron, shell shaped croustade iron. Croustade is a French culinary term meaning a crust or pie crust of any type but this iron would have been used for making deep fried shell shapes as cases for canapés. Croustade irons are now becoming popular with chefs, and various modern examples are available, but it is rare to find a period example and this one dates from c.1890. It is made from cast iron and has an oak handle with a brass collar. It is in excellent condition.
