Item Description
A nineteenth century steel bread knife with a carved wooden handle. The handle is well carved with a flower and leaves. The steel blade is marked “TIMOTHY WHITE CO. LTD. PORTSMOUTH.” with “SHEFFIELD MADE” in a circle. It dates from c 1880. It is also nicely engraved “BreadKnife” in an ornate script.
Timothy Whites originated in Portsmouth, in 1848, as a ships chandlers and general store. In 1869 White qualified as a pharmacist and by 1890 had over 10 branches which sold, hardware as well as being a retail chemist.
This knife would have been made for retail by Timothy Whites original outlet and it is in excellent condition.
