Item Description
A fine quality, Wedgwood, black basalt bust of Mercury. This is marked ”WEDGWOOD”, to the circular base, and the reverse of the bust is impressed “MERCURY”. It dates from c.1860. Mercury was the Roman god of commerce, communication, travellers, luck and trickery and is the equivalent of the Greek god Hermes. The bust is beautifully modelled, with good detail to the hair and feathers on his hat. The piece is in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or restoration.
Dimensions: Height 45.8cm. Length across shoulders 28.5cm. Width 26.5cm.
