Item Description
A large, buff coloured, moulded stoneware jug. This is superbly moulded with a scene depicting Julius Caesar in battle to one side and Boadica and her tribe to the other side. To the rim and the foot are bands of oak leaves and acorns and the twig form handle is entwined with ivy. The moulding is incredible well detailed. The base of the jug is moulded with a circular cartouche with “NOV 1ST. 1839. Published by C.Meigh Hanley. Julius Caesar 6”. Charles Leigh potted at the Old Hall Works Hanley from 1835 until 1849. There is a large chip at the base of the handle and, at this point, the handle has also cracked across so it is unstable.
Dimensions: Height 25cm. Width 21.5cm. Diameter 16cm.
