Item Description
A rare, early 19th century, Wedgwood Rosso Antico pyrophorus vase. This is marked “WEDGWOOD” and it dates from c.1815. Pyrophorus vases were early 19th century, decorative ceramic pots which were designed to create an instant flame. They acted as early, sophisticated match holders. The main container held chemical tipped wooden splints and these were dipped into the acid which was kept in a separate container within the vase. Very few were made and, due to their use, they were often damaged as they were in the habit of exploding. This example is beautifully decorated with Egyptian reliefs in terracotta against a basalt ground. The reliefs are super quality and, remarkably, the piece is still in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Height 6.5cm. Diameter 6.1cm.
