Item Description
An unusual, Wedgwood pie dish with a separate rim. This is marked with”WEDGWOOD” and it is also impressed with the letters “CKD” which is the Wedgwood date code for the year of production which was 1875. There is a further letter “F” which would be the workman’s mark. It is very unusual to find a pie dish of this type produced in this period. The three part examples, like this, were mostly made in the late 18th century, and the caneware dishes were designed to look like pastry when there was a shortage of flour. We have never seen one from this period before and it was possibly made, to a special order, as a replacement for one which had been damaged. It would have been used to serve stewed fruits, thus resembling a fruit pie as opposed to the deeper examples which were for game stews. Although it doesn’t have the fine detail of the 18th century examples it is still a very good quality piece and all three parts are in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Length 30cm. Width 22cm. Height 9cm.
