Item Description
19th Century Bone or Knocker Upper’s Lamp – British, c.1880
A rare and evocative 19th century tinplate lantern, reputedly used by a “knocker upper” — the individuals employed to rouse workers in mining and mill towns before the advent of the alarm clock. British, circa 1880, this lamp is constructed from pierced tin and fitted with panels of shaved bone (cow horn), giving rise to the term bone lamp. These translucent horn panels provided a soft glow, later supplanted by mica and eventually glass.
This example, tall and striking at 50 cm, retains remarkable originality. Some horn or mica panels are cracked, missing, or overpainted, yet the lamp has been left untouched, preserving its integrity as a piece of authentic working history.
