Item Description

very good example of a 6 plank chest typical of the common chests of the 17th and early 18th century.

with 5 planks slotted together using hand cut nails or pegged to form a box. The 6th plank hinged on the top to form the lid.

To preserve the integrity of the chest the end panels were fixed with the grain vertical and longer to create feet lifting the chest of the damp floors.

The ends of the panels have a very simple carving and this is to stop the ends from splitting over time.

This chest meets all the cryterior from the above description and with the unique colour and patina gained from nearly 400 years of use. This is a real piece of history

English, 17th Century
