Item Description

These charming and very collectable earthenware plates were producted at the beginning of the 1900's at the Saint-Amand-les-Eaux potteries and are refered to as 'Talking Plates'. These have sporting motifs - each featuring a different sport and the graphics are so wonderfully evocative of the 1920's - 30's.

The Archery plate depicts an archer shooting up at the sky watched on by two astounded friends and the caption underneath reads "In these misty northen lands, it's impossible to take a shot; I'm always afraid of losing my arrow in the clouds"

The Cycling plate shows at smug cyclist at the top of an ascent goadind his friends with "Will you climb the hill you lazy person? Will you ever get up here?"

Finally the Tennis plate has one rather satisfied player breaking his racket over the head of his opponent, captioned "And did I miss the mark this time?"

All three have the Saint-Amand backstamp and are in lovely condition with no chips or cracks.
