Item Description
This is a lovely example of a procession doll from the first half of the 19th Century, probably Spanish or Italian.
These are called Capipote. The head, hands, and feet are carved from wood (or sometimes terracotta as with this example) with detailed polychrome painting and glass eyes, while the torso is a simplified support frame or a skeletal "cage" structure.
They typically feature movable or articulated arms and joints to allow for dynamic posing.
The figures were designed to be repeatedly dressed in real fabric clothing, robes, and precious liturgical ornaments according to specific feast days or religious ceremonies.
Height 53cm. Width 18cm. Depth 17cm
