Item Description
A wonderful Mid 19th Century Puzzle Jug, balustrade shape, printed in black and enamelled
Manufactured by Elsmore and Forster, Staffordshire (England) circa 1860.
Elsmore and Foster, Clayhills Pottery, Tunstall, Staffordshire operated between 1853 and 1871.
These puzzle jugs were very popular in pubs and gambling establishments.
This puzzle jug has a hole in the handle connected through an inner tube to a hole in the bottom. The unsuspecting drinker who picks up the jug without blocking the hole in the handle will be surprised when the ale gushes out from the base! Images: 5, 6 & 7
The jug is covered with transfers of a clown on each side (Possibly the English clowns, Joseph Grimaldi or Cashmore the Clown) and in addition a spray of flowers and 'cameo' of 19th century vases
The base of the jug is marked with Elsmore & Forster’s underglaze stamp and also with 'Warranted Ironstone China’. Image 7
The jug is in great condition, no chips cracks or repairs, works perfectly and it would make a great display piece.
Dimensions: Height 22cm, max width at handle 18cm, max diameter 15.5cm, diameter at base 12.5cm
Shipping: Tracked and insured: £12
