Item Description
A fabulous Palissy style Portuguese majolica wall plate, dating to approximately the early 20th century. Typically of these pieces it features decoration in hight relief, textured surfaces and a colourfully glossy majolica glaze. In the middle is a crab sitting on a surface of glazed ceramic chips, with seaweed, goose barnacles and muscle shells round the edge, all of which are well modelled. There are holes in the back-rim to allow for ease of hanging.
This piece is clearly influenced by designs of the 16th century French potter Bernard Palissy, who pioneered a realistic, rustic style of design using relief moulded animals and fish.
The plate is in good condition with minor signs of wear.
