Item Description
A set of six interesting pewter wedding spoons, dating to approximately the mid 20th century. These spoons are based on a design dating back to 1677 and the marriage of William of Orange to Mary, later to become King William III & Queen Mary II of England, Scotland & Ireland. At the top of each handle, the spoons feature a detailed and crisply moulded, two-sided stylised image of the King & Queen standing arm in arm, holding sceptres and wearing crowns. Because of this they are often known as 'William & Mary' spoons. The King & Queen perch on top of elaborately moulded handles featuring a lion rampant, a comic mask, a pelican and a snake.
The spoons are made of solid pewter and probably originate from Germany. The backs bear a maker's touchmark. The spoons are in generally good condition but due to the malleable nature of the pewter, there is some distortion and bubbling to some of the bowls.
Harking back to their original marking of the marriage of William & Mary, this type of spoon is traditionally given as a wedding gift in some Central European countries.
