Item Description

A rare, characterful 19th century elm pig bench with beautiful texture, honest wear and the kind of patina you simply can’t replicate – an instant focal point for layered, lived-in interiors.

Design notes
• Authentic wabi-sabi surface with depth, grain and tone
• Sculptural, primitive silhouette that reads calm and considered (never overly rustic)
• A strong ‘anchor’ piece for styling – adds warmth and honesty to polished schemes

Traditionally made as a working pig bench, this original 19th century piece has been carefully conserved and sympathetically stabilised so it can be enjoyed as beautiful, usable seating -without losing any of its original character.

Where it works
• Hallway / boot room for a practical, understated welcome
• End of bed to soften a bedroom and add warmth and texture
• Dining rooms as occasional seating with sculptural presence
• Bathroom / spa spaces for towels and accessories (as a styling bench)

In wonderfully untouched form, with a warm natural surface and timeworn texture, it sits beautifully in pared-back modern interiors (Japandi, organic modern) as well as country houses and more traditional schemes. A true one-off with the quiet confidence that only antique wood brings.

Conservation & condition
Conserved using traditional, minimal-intervention methods to preserve as much original timber as possible. Discreet strengthening has been added only where needed, keeping the build visually true while making it suitable for everyday use. All wood has been carefully checked and preserved, clean and ready for installation.

Salvaged from an old barn and restored piece by piece, this has been a real labour of love for our team – secured and stabilised with small, sympathetic additions so it’s strong, sound and ready to live with.

Condition is excellent and sturdy. Despite its beautifully primitive appearance, the bench is stable and comfortable to sit on.

Made from mixed elm and ash, it’s an attractive, tactile piece for adding natural wood texture and depth. Style it as a bench, a low plinth for books and ceramics, or as a soft counterpoint to stone, linen and plaster finishes.
