Large Victorian 1887 Carved Date Stone Architectural Garden Ornament

An original 1887 sandstone date stone, beautifully hand carved and full of period character. With its confident presence, timeworn age and beautifully flowing calligraphy, it makes a striking garden ornament with a strong sense of history.

Measuring approximately 30 inches high, or 76cm, the sandstone block has impressive scale and would originally have adorned a large property to mark its building date. The carved 1887 numerals are deeply evocative of the period, with a graceful hand-cut script that gives the piece an especially elegant quality.

The stone has weathered beautifully over time, developing a rich natural patina with moss covering much of the surface. This aged texture gives it an unmistakably genuine appearance, making it particularly well suited to established gardens, period properties and landscape schemes where natural age and material character are highly valued.

Versatile in its placement, it could be displayed freestanding, built into a wall, laid flat within a footpath, or simply positioned amongst planting as a sculptural focal point.
