Item Description
An Antique Continental painted folk art marriage coffer, probably Belgian or Flemish, dated 1678, the front with two arcaded panels with a central tree design amidst scrolling foliage within moulded borders, the sides with painted cartouches, one with the inscription 'ESTER FILLE D. DAVID VERGNIE', the opposing side with the inscrition 'LE 29 MARS 1678 AR', both sides with decoratively engraved iron drop handles, the interior with candle box, original strap hinges and ratchet lock, raised on low bracket feet,
The paintwork appears to be original and in good conditiion overall, the hinges and lock are original. The lock catch on the lid has been moved so the lock doesn't currenty operate - this is likely due to it being a ratchet lock which can be a little difficult to operate.
