Item Description
A lovely, mid-sized enamel sign for 'Churchman's Counter Shag', complete with a nice little pictorial of a packet of the tobacco.
Churchman's "Counter" shag was a loose tobacco which got its name from the finely cut strands appearing like 'shag' fabric.
Supposedly the early 20th century was a more innocent era, where the word 'shag'/'shagg' could be displayed boldly without any misconstruing, however when the 'shag' is advertised with the strap-line 'the best lasts longest', you've really got to wonder just how innocent these advertisements were!
This sign is likely to date around the 1950s. It was issued by the Imperial Tobacco Company - an alliance formed between British cigarette manufacturers in 1901 (Churchman's joined in 1902) to counter the American 'invasion' to the market.
It's survived the decades in reasonable order. It retains a good surface gloss, a bright white background and vibrant colours. There are patches of enamel loss across the whole sign and the upper left corner is missing entirely, though the legibility of the piece is unaffected and the pictorial of the packet in decent order with the fine detail of the printed label still present. The sign displays well and can be hung using the remaining mounting holes.
It measures 76.5cm wide x 51cm high
