Item Description
This litho-printed tin advertising sign for the Daily Express newspaper is wonderfully no-nonsense. A striking piece of c.1970s advertising that has aged nicely, developing the sort of vintage look that just can't be replicated.
The Daily Express is a UK newspaper that ran alongside the Sunday Express. It was launched in 1900 and by the 1940s had the largest circulation in the world. The rise of television and the introduction of competition from The Sun newspaper in the 1960s saw a decline the Daily Express' circulation but as can be seen here, that didn't stop an aggressive marketing strategy.
This sign is printed on galvanised tin and would have been displayed outside a newsagents, possibly attached to a newspaper stand.
It's has the inevitable losses around the outer edges, and evidence of a fire being started below it (vandals!) but it remains an eye-catching piece that can be hung using it's original mounting holes and displays well.
It measures 76cm high x 51cm wide.
