Item Description
This early 20th century showcard for Daren Bread is a rare survivor. I've not seen another example with this same design and doubt that there are many left in existence.
Daren Bread was a brown loaf, produced under license by bakers all over the country from flour that was ground at the Daren Mill at Dartford in Kent. In late 19th - early 20th centuries there were a major competitor to Hovis but in the 1930s the mill went bust, the Daren brand was merged into the Hovis brand and phased out.
It's likely that this showcard dates to the 1920s, it emulates the formatting of the educational school charts from the same era and gives a very plain + factual account of the benefits of the Daren loaf - to the reverse of the showcard is a very long and detailed script about it all... The piece has survived the decades in good order; the corners are a little bruised but otherwise there's little to note in the way of damage. Original hanging string remains present and functional.
It measures 48.5cm high x 36cm wide.
