Item Description
The BP Motor Spirit Union Jack is one of the most iconic (and sought after) pieces of British automobilia.
This double-sided enamel example was produced by Franco Signs, W1 (London's West End) at some point around the 1920s. It would have originally been a 'flange' sign - with a 90 degree returned edge, designed to allow it to stick out from a wall. At some point in the sign's history this returned edge and around 1/8th of the sign itself has been cut off ... These sorts of alterations were often made when the sign was new to allow it to fit in a certain gap on the garage's wall.
This particular example represents a bit of a dilemma to a collector ... Although the flange and one edge are missing, the remainder of the sign is in remarkably good condition. There are some losses around the edges (especially the cut edge) and two small holes have been drilled; one to the top edge and one to the cut edge. But aside from some very light surface scratches and a couple of minor losses to the enamel, the sign has survived the best part of a century with vibrant colours and a fantastic surface gloss.
With examples that retain their flange now generally listed with four figure price tags, if you're able to accept the alterations made to this sign at some stage in it's life, you'll get a punchy example for less than half of those asking prices...
