Item Description

A really lovely example of its type, this litho-printed showcard for Ferris & Son's Dawlish Brewery features some fantastic typography contained within elaborate banderoles. The colours are vibrant, the printing crisp and the piece has survived the decades in excellent order, complete with it's original pressed brass hanging eye.

Dawlish is town in Devon, England. In the White’s Directory of 1878 Richard Ferris and Son were listed as brewers, maltsters, farmers and coal merchants.
The Dawlish Brewery was founded in 1817 and sold to Richard Ferris in 1825. It remained in the Ferris family until the entire business, including the brewery and the pubs it owned was sold in 1926 to Heavitree Brewery in Exeter.

This showcard was printed by James Dilks & Co. of Nottingham and dates to the late 19th century. Curiously the 'Ferris & Son' name is a separate bit of printing that has been cut out and pasted into the banderole. The printing, cutting and glueing has all been done very carefully and competently - the few other examples of this showcard that I have seen all seem to have the same applied name band - presumably a typo or similar occurred at the time of printing and this was James Dilks & Co's solution.

Condition is very good, there's slight yellowing, slight knocks to the outer edges and slight surface scratching but for an early piece of advertising, it would have to be considered a very good example.

It measures 57cm wide x 45cm high.
